Some athletes find their way to triathlon later in life, while others like Jen seem destined for the sport from the start. A competitive swimmer from childhood to her days as a D1 collegiate athlete, Jen’s journey into triathlon began at just eight years old when she competed in the Wonder Bread Ironkids race. With a cotton T-shirt thrown over her swimsuit and a big-wheeled Huffy bike, she had no idea that this early experience would set the stage for a lifelong love of endurance sports. Then, life took its natural course; while raising kids, she had to balance family and fitness, but the competitive fire never faded. In her 40s, Jen found herself back in the game, this time stronger than ever, fueled by the camaraderie and support of the Betty Squad, a community of fierce and inspiring women.
However, triathlon is about more than just physical endurance. It’s a test of mental and emotional resilience. In 2016, Jen faced her toughest challenge yet. Struggling with anemia, low energy availability (LEA), and dysfunctional adrenals, she could barely get out of bed, let alone train. Misdiagnosed multiple times, she became her own biggest advocate, seeking out specialists who understood the needs of female endurance athletes. The experience changed her, not just as an athlete but as a coach. She learned to train smarter, prioritize recovery, fuel properly, and listen to her body. That shift in mindset has become the foundation of her coaching philosophy. She now helps her clients understand that success isn’t just about pushing harder: it’s about creating a sustainable, healthy approach to training. Seeing athletes recognize this and thrive is what makes coaching so rewarding to her

So, what does Jen recommend for any first-timers coming to Wildflower? Four main things: soak it in, stay positive, relax, and don’t sweat the small stuff.
