USA Triathlon Inclusion Experience: Breaking Barriers in Multisport
For decades, the image of a triathlete was often framed by elite-level fitness and expensive gear; consequently, many felt the sport was out of reach. Today, however, the landscape of multisport is undergoing a profound transformation. Today, the finish line is being redefined by the diversity of the faces crossing it.
At the heart of this shift is the USA Triathlon Inclusion Experience, a cornerstone of the organization’s Belonging & Access initiative. It is a bold, action-oriented commitment to ensure that whether you are a paratriathlete, a person of color, or a member of the LGBTQ+ community, you have a place at the starting line.
The Four Pillars of “Belonging & Access”
To understand the Inclusion Experience, one must first understand the framework USA Triathlon (USAT) uses to drive systemic change. USAT focuses on four core principles:
- Diversity: Building a community reflective of the United States, focusing on race, gender, age, and socioeconomic status.
- Equity: Ensuring fair treatment and equal access for athletes and industry professionals alike.
- Inclusion: Fostering a welcoming culture where everyone feels safe and supported.
- Access: Breaking down the “pay-to-play” barriers that often prevent entry into the sport.
From Omaha to National Expansion: A Success Story
The initiative gained significant momentum following a pilot in Omaha; furthermore, this success was cemented when all 22 athletes in that inaugural group successfully crossed the finish line.
What do participants receive?
The Inclusion Experience isn’t just about a race bib; it’s a comprehensive support system. Selected athletes often receive:
- Free Race Entry: Removing the immediate financial hurdle.
- Personalized Coaching: Bridging the knowledge gap for beginners.
- A Supportive Community: Pairing first-timers with mentors and a cohort of peers.
Following the 100% finish rate in Omaha, USAT has expanded the program to the Wildflower Experience and four other races across the country, meeting athletes in their own local communities.
How to Get Involved: Become an Ally or an Athlete
Join the “Elevate28” Movement

Final Thoughts: The Finish Line is for Everyone
USA Triathlon is proving that the sport’s soul is found in its community. Ultimately, this means you don’t need a $10,000 bike to be a triathlete; instead, you simply need the courage to start.
