It’s Your Time to Thrive – Empowering Women

by Colleen Bousman

Have you ever met those people whose energy is just contagious? When we announced we were bringing back Wildflower, Jen Temperley emailed in, “I LOVE WILDFLOWER. It is no doubt what the tri community has been missing, and I will do whatever I can to help.” Well, that she did. She brought her Squad – Betty Squad that is, along with friends as well as some of her clients. They shared the weekend together, and then they cheered her on to yet another impressive Wildflower Squared Women’s Top Podium Finish.

I remember talking to her at Wildflower before many had arrived about the way she looks at aging through a different lens and her desire to see women thrive in her coaching business. We casually visited about how much she loved the peacefulness of riding around at Lake San Antonio before everyone arrived, and she just enjoys the stars and sunrises here over the lake. She asked if there was anything she or her friends could do to help and left with a smile.

Recently, during a long hike while talking with my husband about balancing work/life for Wildflower 2026, none other than our very own ambassador Jen T., came to my mind. Her talent to empower active women 40+ to optimize nutrition, exercise, sleep and recovery so they can achieve sustainable results was something that I needed to incorporate into my life. I had an endurance race of my own on my hands – building back a legendary event from the ground up after a great year in 2025, but a long road ahead in this journey. I knew Jen understood what was at stake and how my passion for this event was going to cause stress, long hours and so many other taxing things that I needed her help to balance. With one text we connected, and it was less than 24 hours before I found myself on a call talking about how we both sent our kiddos off to college recently, how we love our jobs, how we have found acceptance and even harmony in our midlife, but how we all need help at times. I got off the phone and realized this is a story I must share with each of you. So here is the incredible story of Jen + Robin with Fly Health and Wellness.

How did you both get into health, wellness, and endurance coaching?

We’ve walked the same path from the start – being young athletes in our early years and then we met on the swim team at a Division I college and knew immediately we had the same values and interests. Post-college, we both built different professional careers, raised kids, all while remaining competitive in triathlon. Over the years, we took on coaching triathletes and endurance athletes, helping others cross their own finish lines while quickly realizing that keeping your health intact goes way beyond the finish line. We both evolved as coaches by expanding our certifications and credentials to embrace a more “whole person” approach to long-term health.

Starting FLY together came naturally…With decades of experience behind us and a shared passion for helping others, we combined forces to make a difference. We have organically grown into this space of whole health!

What is your life like now?

In a nutshell, it’s the same, but different.  We’re older, our kids have been launched out of the nest, and we balance work with sport and play – we just do it in a more holistic and balanced way!  We have gained wisdom through our education, trial and error, setbacks and challenges, and we are gentler on ourselves.

Robin is a national board-certified coach (NBHWC) with a deep focus on whole-health lifestyle and mindset coaching.  Although she put her 30 years of triathlon behind her, she is a competitive Swim Run athlete and participates in multi-day backcountry adventures.  She helps people build a “health portfolio” for long-term health working on motivation, mindset, and behavior change as they relate to one’s physical, mental and emotional health.

Jen still competes at an elite level in triathlon and her client focus is more on longevity in sport, coaching peri- and post-menopausal women, and helping athletes race well without compromising their health. She is a USAT triathlon coach, ACE certified strength coach, and a PN Nutrition Coach.

We have grown into every season of life and have found a healthier balance between workouts, nutrition, work, play and joy…much different than the turn and burn days of “go hard or go home.”

What does “coaching well beyond the finish line” mean to you?

Although there is a finish line you cross at every race, there is only one finish line in life.  Coaching beyond the finish line means training for ALL seasons of life in ALL areas of health – not just during a race season.  Life is like one big, long endurance event – an evolution and a process with lots of rest stops and special needs bags along the way!  We have clients at different stages of life, so you don’t have to be chasing podiums to benefit from our coaching.  Our philosophy is rooted around the journey, embracing every season so that you’re flowing through life.

For us, coaching beyond the finish line means helping women build a health portfolio that lasts long after race day.  It’s helping them recognize how racing fits into the bigger picture, and how it’s only one component to living a meaningful, joyful and healthy life.  We work on how to fuel properly, manage stress, recover well, and move in ways that keep them strong and capable for decades, not just for one season. We love guiding athletes who still want to perform, but not at the expense of their health, and showing non-racers that these same tools work for everyday life too.

How is coaching a solution for change?

Most of the women who find us already “know” a lot about health, they’ve read the articles, tried the diets, joined the challenges, but are often times stagnant or stuck.  We get at the root of WHY they are “stuck” and how to get “unstuck.”

Coaching provides the platform for open conversation, self-discovery, and autonomy.  It gives them structure, support, and accountability without being rigid. We help them break big goals into small, doable steps and then personalize those steps to their actual schedule, training, and family life.  Empowerment, paired with consistency, results in lasting change.

Why focus on women in their 40s and 50s?

We are both well into our 50s so we’ve lived it, and clients often relate to us and vice versa.  There is a shared experience there.  This is also where we see the most people feel paralyzed with body changes, facing unknowns, and reestablish their identity.  This stage of life is where the rules change; hormones shift, recovery takes longer, and what worked in your 20s and 30s doesn’t yield the same results – at all. We have witnessed women in their 40s and 50s are ready to reclaim their life and health for that second phase of life.

What does community mean to you?

Without community life would be lonely, boring and meaningless!  It’s important, AND it means different things to each of us.  Community is the reason Jen still competes triathlon. The Betty Squad, various training partners, and the women she coaches have kept her motivated and connected far beyond any single race.  For Robin, community means giving back to others and volunteering.  She volunteers several weeks a year to an organization who serves active duty military special forces.

Community means supporting others and bringing like-minded people together while forming connections and nurturing current relationships.  We believe that as humans we operate stronger together.  After all, people thrive when they feel a sense of belonging! It is one of the reasons why we created our small group programs and we are planning retreats rooted in connection for 2026…

How have you each found purpose today, and how does it look different than five years ago?

Our greater purpose has never wavered, it’s always been about helping others reach their potential. What’s changed is how we define “potential.” Thanks to our own years in sport, we now see it as so much bigger than times, distances, or race results.

Five years ago, our focus was narrower: mostly racing and traditional personal training, prescribing workouts. Today, our coaching reflects a broader perspective. We coach the whole person through a proactive lens with long-term health in mind, not just short-term goals.

On a personal level, we both feel our purpose now is about being present and more intentional with our choices, time, and energy. We still love helping people cross finish lines, but even more, we love seeing them thrive in everyday life because of the habits and confidence they’ve built.

Where does “FLY” come from in your company name?

When a client has spread their wings and is flying, they are soaring!  Their wings aren’t clipped or stuck, they are open and strong.  FLY embodies freedom, independence, capability and confidence.  FLY represents moving forward, upward and onward.  It also has a personal layer, as we both swam butterFLY in college. Our hope for clients is that through coaching, they finally feel in control and confident enough to spread their wings and fly!

What does embracing joy mean to you in a health and wellness mindset?

For us, embracing joy is about making health feel like something you get to do, not something you have to do. It’s training and eating in ways that energize you instead of deplete you. It’s giving yourself grace when life gets messy and celebrating the small wins, not just the finish lines.

Joy can be internal and external.  When you love yourself, truly love yourself and believe in yourself, you find a contentment and joy that allows your light to shine ANYWHERE.  When you combine that with actively participating in your health, you feel GOOD, really GOOD.   As a result, there is a sense of joy that comes from maintaining commitments to yourself, prioritizing yourself and following your moral compass.  When you’re thriving in this space, magic happens in all areas of life!

Sport taught us everything about resilience, discipline, and support systems. Training for triathlons and endurance events showed us firsthand how movement, nutrition, recovery, and mindset all work together. Those lessons became the backbone of our coaching methods.

Our love of sport also taught us that friendships, community, and connection are what keep women motivated to stay active as they age. It’s way more fun with your friends, and it’s often the missing ingredient in long-term success. That’s why our coaching blends training, fueling, and mindset with support and connection.  We love our people!

Tell us about your online programs and wellness workshops.

Our signature programs grew out of everything we’ve learned from our 1:1 coaching sessions and from talking to so many women. They combine science-based education with weekly strategies, live group calls, and direct access to us so women can personalize the material to their own lives.

Nourish 360: Reposition Your Nutrition is a 12-week nutrition education program that helps women break free from the diet cycle and build a healthier mindset around food and meal planning.

I am currently enrolled in their 12-week program. In January, we will be releasing a podcast on “Our Wild Stories” where Jen and Robin share more about their Health + Wellness journey, the people they have met, how women 40+ do have specific needs to thrive and I will share about the discoveries I made during the program.  They may even challenge you to race Wildflower Squared so watch out.
